Clearwater House oozes style and comfort
Project: Clearwater
House, Christchurch
Architects: Wilson
and Hill Architects
Carpet: Tussore
felted loop pile, Elysium shag pile
This very stylish family home is part of the
Clearwater golf resort in Christchurch and stands apart from its
neighbours with its very sleek lines and distinctive H-shape.

The palette of natural materials encompassing copper cladding,
timber, concrete and stone on the exterior, has been translated to
the interior with the use of basalt tile floors and wool
carpet.
Tussore, a felted wool carpet with a slubbed silk effect from
the designer Bremworth Collection range was chosen for use in the
spacious dining room, office and gym with
Elysium shagpile used in the home cinema, lounge and
bedrooms. Architect Chris Wilson said wool was appropriate
for the project given its soft and luxurious feel and because it
was a natural and renewable product, which is very much part of the
New Zealand culture. Tussore was also selected
because of its level loop pile construction which gave a clean,
flat look that worked with the overall design scheme.
The random striations in the carpet contrast well with the sharp
white walls and cabinetry in the dining room and provide a sense of
softness which is also echoed by the warm wood in the ceilings and
upper walls.
The project was unusual in the open brief given to the
architects to detail the interior scheme, right down to the
selection of furniture and furnishings.
